Hi! I’m Ryan, from Energy with Ryan, and I’m an energy worker and guide!

I work with channelled angelic energy to help you release what isn’t serving you, raise your vibration, and guide you to your soul’s mission so you can carry out your purpose and effortlessly share your light with the world.

When I work with energy, I tend to work a lot with different energy centers, otherwise known as chakras*. When these centers are open and flowing, we feel good and are in harmony with our body, mind, and spirit. When blocked, stagnant, or overactive, we can feel outta whack and just not good.

*It’s important to note that chakras are not a Western concept. Chakras (Sanskrit for wheel) come from early Hinduism and are a very complex system. In the West when we talk about chakras, we are talking about the “Western Chakra System” which has been colonized and modified from early Hinduism.

So today I want to talk to you about one of my favourite chakras: the throat!

The Throat Energy Center

The throat chakra governs communication and expression. It includes the area of the neck, throat, tongue and is the 5th chakra in the Western Chakra System.

I have personally done a lot of work around my throat chakra. It’s an energy space that can be so easily suppressed by society and its “norms”, especially if you are a BBIPOC and or LGTBQIA+ person.

As we are energetic beings, we need to have good energy hygiene, specifically for powerful energy centers like the throat! That includes noticing what blocks our energy and ways to support and restore our energy.

Throat Chakra Blocks

We are afraid to speak our truth. We’re afraid to put ourselves out there. We are ashamed of some piece of ourselves (that in fact makes us so wonderful and unique). We worry about what people think of us.

We listen to our own inner critic and let it rule our life. We criticize others, judge others. We lie.

We swallow our emotions to be people pleasers and keep the peace and not create any waves. We become small. We ignore how we feel. We put others' needs before our own. We believe in toxic positivity where any feeling other than happiness shouldn’t be felt. We separate ourselves from any feelings.

Ways Heal & Support Your Throat Chakra

1. Observe your throat space

I think the first step is to really just observe your throat space and see if you can tap into the energetic differences you can feel. How does it feel to tell a lie? How does it feel when you share your authentic truth?

And remember, sometimes the in-the-moment feelings can confuse us. You can people please and feel good at the time, but then later feel the swell of emotion in your throat that feels like you have a lump in there. You can affirm a boundary and feel nervous, but later notice your throat feels expansive.

So track these feelings, keep note of the before and afters; this will give you so much insight. When we are able to notice what feels good and what doesn’t, we are then able to make changes and support our best self.

2. Explore Your True Authentic Self

Explore what it means to be you.

It can be difficult to see who we truly are. Be kind to yourself on this journey. There’s societal norms and intrusive media and familial pressures and oppression and patriarchal bullshit and so much constant noise around us…

That being said, dig into you. What are your values? What makes you happy? What are hard-no’s? What are your big yes’s? What excites you to the point where you flap your hands and fumble over your words? Look into hobbies. Watch movies and listen to podcasts of people who inspire you.

Just know that the things you know you aren’t are just as important as the things you know you are. And when you have all of this important data, you are able to step more firmly into your true authentic self.

3. Take Gentle, Imperfect Action & Develop Self Trust

You now have a better understanding of what your boundaries are, what you’re passionate about, what is important to you…now it’s time to gently take action.

As stated before, working with your throat chakra is a journey and taking action is a muscle that must be developed.

Start small!

Perhaps that looks like telling friends you can no longer text after 9 p.m. because you have a tech bedtime. Or maybe it looks like you sharing the new art you created with your family.

Whatever it is, know that by taking these monumental and small steps, you are building your own self-trust, your own courage.

Throat Chakra Affirmations

Say these every day. Write them in your journal; write them in your planner. Make them into a song. Dance to them.

Speaking these affirmations out loud will bring so much healing energy to your throat! If your throat needs some extra love, you might even feel a bit of resistance or nervousness to speak them out loud. That’s okay. Go slow. Trust the process.

  • I take perfectly imperfect action to stand up for myself and to express myself.

  • I am safe to express my needs, wants, and desires.

  • I easily speak my truth.

  • My voice is powerful.

  • I have important things to say and people love to listen.

Throat Chakra Healing Ideas

There are a lot of different ways to bring healing to your energy centers. There is energy healing, acupuncture, yoga… and there are also tons of free ways to bring healing and harmony to your throat.

Here are some of my favourites:

  • Gargle with warm saltwater

  • Journal about your personal truths and desires

  • Practice saying your truths and desires in the mirror

  • Visualize a soothing blue bubble of love around your throat

  • Gently massage your jaw and neck (look into Gua Sha or facial massage)

  • Sing your favourite song (extra points for being loud and in your car)

  • Start an emotion journal, a safe space where you can write down and express how you feel

  • Wear a scarf in the winter (extra points for a blue scarf) and keep that area protected from the elements

  • Drink peppermint tea

  • Go on a walk in the forest and breathe the clean, fresh air

  • Create something — art, food, music, dance, etc…

  • Celebrate every boundary you share

  • Dress exactly as you’ve always wanted and then go do something outside of your house that brings you joy
